| Summary: Wenninger is a right-hander with long levers who throws from a high three-quarters slot, and his delivery looks free and loose. The fastball has gained some velocity. It’s up in the mid-90s and has reached the upper 90s, and the added speed has stayed with him as his innings have increased. On its own it’s an average pitch. Even when he hits his spots at the letters, hitters don’t swing through it much. The sinker he’s added, which runs hard to the arm side, makes the fastball as a whole more effective. The splitter is his best pitch, a plus offering that looks like the fastball out of his hand and then drops sharply near the plate. He uses it against both lefties and righties, burying it for swings off the plate or dropping it in the zone, and it keeps hitters on either side of the plate from feeling comfortable. He knows it’s his best weapon and throws it a lot. A firm slider with sharp, two-plane action is his main breaking ball, and he mixes in a bigger, slower curveball for a different look. The three pitches behind the fastball give him a broader mix than he had when he started. His delivery has a front-facing windup and a big leg lift, with a twist of the lower half before he drives down the slope, and he creates plenty of separation between his hips and shoulders. It isn’t a deceptive delivery. He’s athletic, throws strikes, and gets more out of his command than his walk totals would indicate. He projects as a back-end starter, with a fastball that’s solid but not dominant and a splitter that carries the arsenal. If the splitter keeps working against better hitters and one of the breaking balls separates, there’s room for more. Another plus pitch is what would move him up. | |||||||||||
