| Summary: Virahonda hits right-handed with a short path to the ball and little movement before the swing, and he locates the ball reliably, fastballs especially. Offspeed pitches have occasionally gotten him out in front. He’s swung at fewer bad pitches in each of the past two years, and the overall plan at the plate is still taking shape. The raw strength is average for now, but it’s showing up in games at a better rate, with more balls driven on a line and fewer rolled over, a useful trait for a player who doesn’t run well. The swing gets underneath the ball and sends it mostly to the pull side, and he can lean on that side too heavily. Added strength and more at-bats should lift the output. The glove is his anchor. He has a sturdy build with tight, quick movements, receives and blocks well, and gets the ball out of his glove fast on throws, which suppresses running games. The arm is strong. Overall he grades above average defensively, with room to climb into plus territory. He’s a safe bet to reach the majors as a reserve catcher, since the glove supports that outcome. How far beyond that he goes depends on the bat, and if it keeps improving he could become a regular behind the plate. | |||||||||||
