| Summary: Butler is a left-handed hitter with a polished look and a barrel that does damage. He starts from an athletic, slightly wide base with his hands set high, and the swing is compact and smooth, with a calm move forward that keeps him in balance and on time. He’s a hitterish bat with quiet hands, strong hand-eye skills, and good control of the barrel. He seldom swings at pitches off the plate, works counts, draws plenty of walks, and sprays contact to all fields, including against quality velocity. The power is emerging. His bat speed has improved, and he’s learned to lift the ball to the pull side, so the pop is beginning to show up in games. A sturdy build leaves space to add size, and above-average power looks like a reasonable projection as he matures. The hit tool remains the carrying strength, and it has a chance to grade among the better ones in his class. Defensively, shortstop is his home. He looks natural in the infield, with reliable hands, clean footwork, and good lateral range, and the arm is outstanding, near the top of the scale with carry across the diamond. He’s bigger than most shortstops, and if he adds weight he could slide to third base, where he’d probably be a plus defender. Speed is the weakest tool. He’s an average runner who may slow down as his body fills out, though his instincts on the bases and in the field make up for some of it. With a bat that gets on base and hits for average, a shortstop’s arm and glove, and power on the rise, he’s among the most well-rounded prep players in the class. If his power and his speed both improve, the ceiling is very high. | |||||||||||
