| Summary: Mesa is a right-handed hitter with a slender, long-limbed build and plenty of strength still to add, and the ball already comes off his bat with authority. His swing is balanced and works underneath the ball, producing backspin and lift. He has strong hands and quick bat speed, the quality of his contact is solid right now, and the power keeps climbing. With a frame that’s still filling out, he has the projection of a big home run threat, and he pulls the ball with force without giving up his approach to do it. The approach leans aggressive, and that’s a real risk. Pitchers will exploit how often he chases as they improve, and a habit that works against weaker arms probably won’t hold up. He doesn’t miss much today, but strikeouts and the occasional weak contact are legitimate concerns. Few players in his class project for as much power, so the question is whether the approach tightens as the competition gets better. Shortstop is his home, and few players in his class defend it better. He reads the game naturally, with quiet hands, a strong arm, and a sense of timing that keeps him composed. He’s light on his feet for a bigger player, covers ground in both directions, attacks slow rollers, and makes difficult plays from any angle, including throws while moving. The throws can tail and sink. He’s an average runner. If his body outgrows the position, third base would suit him well. He pairs a shortstop’s defense with a bat built for power. How much of that power shows up depends on how the approach holds as pitching improves. | |||||||||||
