Summary:
Harlan is a right-handed hitter built like a slugger, taken in the third round, with raw power that grades double-plus and that some scouts consider an 80. The swing is fast and the power is easy. He doesn’t swing at everything or overswing, and the ball goes a long way when he hits it well. He had surgery on his hip labrum after the draft to fix a problem that had bothered him for two years, and he’s moved more freely since then.

Contact is the central risk. He struggles against non-fastballs, particularly high velocity and spin, and his contact skills haven’t kept up with his strength. In the load, his hands halt as he decides whether to swing, and the bat tilts upward with his arm extended, leaving him a bit behind the pitch and producing misses. A simplified swing with a moderate hand load is an improvement, and strength and experience should help more. He’s done well against left-handed pitching in a small sample and only moderately against right-handed.

Third base is where he plays now, but right field is the likelier home. He’s had accuracy problems on throws and limited quickness, and he struggles to handle scoops and relay them. His arm is plus and would work well in the outfield, where his power also fits. He runs poorly and doesn’t help on the bases. Evaluators credit him with a strong work ethic.

The power is what makes him a prospect. If the swing becomes simpler and the contact improves enough to use the strength, he could break out, and the route most likely goes through right field.
