| Summary: Wilkinson is a left-hander who gets by on a fastball that averages 90 and peaks at 92. It plays up for two reasons: it moves arm-side, and his delivery is unusual. He drops so close to the ground that his body nearly brushes it, delivering from a very low release point at a wide angle with long extension, which gives hitters a rising line they find hard to square. He attacks the strike zone and competes. The changeup is his best pitch and the one he uses to miss bats. It comes in the low 80s and fades away to the arm side, much like his fastball, and it’s most effective when he puts it off the plate. It can show sink that gets swings and misses, though the action isn’t consistent yet. The slider in the upper 70s and the cutter in the mid 80s both grade below average, and his spin isn’t a strength. The slider is an in-zone pitch with tight sideways movement and little drop at the end, and it works because of his command. The lack of raw velocity is the concern. He could give up home runs against major league hitters, and he’s been missing fewer bats lately. His command is excellent, his control could grade plus, and his conditioning has improved since he turned pro, though he has to sustain it. He projects as a back-end starter or a multi-inning reliever, depending on how much velocity he can add. The changeup from the left side, the command, and the delivery are what he has to build on. | |||||||||||
