Delivery/Mechanics: 3/4 slot with good, deliberate balance. Creates some downhill plane and hides ball behind head until late. Some arm bend early in the delivery but gets solid extension in delivery.
Player: Jared Shuster | Draft Day Age: 21
School: Wake Forest | Position(s): LHP
Height: 6’3” | Weight: 210 lbs. | Bats: Left | Throws: Left |
Fastball: Wide range on the fastball from 88 to 94 with it topping out as high as 97 at times in the spring. He has a running two seamer but the four seamer is the better offering. The likely velo will be more in the 92-93 range as the spring spike is unlikely to stick.
Change: Best pitch, keeps good 8-10 MPH gap from fastball. Has run, drops off the table. Plus pitch potential. Shows command of offering in any count.
Slider: More cut action than big slider most often. Struggles with consistency at times and can slow arm leading to slurvy offering at times. Needs to make a big jump with this pitch to be a starter.
Summary: Inconsistent production throughout his career. If we go purely on his performances while wearing a Wake Forest jersey he would rank much lower than this, if we take his performances purely in summer leagues, he would be much higher. The command is a concern at times but he has shown much improvement in that over the past twelve months. If the slider comes along he has the potential of being a solid number four starter but this is a player with a big gap between ceiling and floor. |
