2023 MLB Draft: Cameron Johnson, LHP, IMG Academy

Player: Cameron Johnson
School: IMG Academy                                                         Position(s): LHP
Height: 6’5″                       Weight: 230 lbs.                       Bats: Left                         Throws: Left
Pitches:
Fastball: 92-97, sits more 92-94, reports out of IMG he has been up to 98 in preseason workouts. Heavy cross body horizontal action that backs up late with sink. Incredibly heavy pitch, easy plus.
Slider: 77-82, flashes plus, more average to above, late 2-plane break. Seen more looping versions, would like to see it more sharp than big. Good vertical action at best. Wrist comes at slightly different angle than fastball, elite bats will pick up on it.
Change: 84-88, very raw offering. Have seen moment with real dip and run that could be a true out pitch but still lots of work to get there consistently.
Delivery/Mechanics: Very low 3/4 slot, good leg drive with strong legs. Hides ball a long time, mild short arm but quality extension. Heavy cross body action. Uncomfortable ABs for lefties. Upper half inconsistent in finish, when busy he loses command, when calm he has quality command for a prep lefty. Good size but has body to hold plenty of more muscle.
Other: Transferred to IMG Academy from Bishop McNamara in Maryland. Committed to LSU. https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
Summary: A big, power throwing lefty currently getting the benefits of being at the IMG Academy, there is plenty to love with Johnson. I have higher hopes for the command than I see with a lot, some mild tweaks with the body and calming it will allow him to have average to better command without taking away from the stuff. Easy starter profile, has body and mechanics to hold deep into outings. Has ace upside but best projection is as a number two or three starter.
