2027 MLB Draft: Charlie Bates, SS, Stanford

Player: Charlie Bates
School: StanfordPosition(s): SS
Height: 6′Weight: 190 lbs.Bats: LeftThrows: Right
Summary: Bates would have been more of a surprise to sign a pro contract than make it to campus in 2024, not because of talent, but his commitment to Stanford, just steps from his high school, was so strong. He is a quality defender up the middle but drops the arm slot more than necessary and does lack some arm strength leaving some question as to whether that is his best spot or if he is destined for second long term. He generates plenty of bat speed at the dish with an effortless stroke and make hard contact quite a bit. The leg kick does impact his timing though, and can be a real swing-and-miss risk when his timing is off. There is some power potential as he fills out, but will never be more than fringy, meaning the hit tool has to improve. Three years on campus could do a lot of good for his draft stock.
