Summary:
The raw stuff is hard to argue with. A fastball that sits 94-98 and has touched 100 with arm-side run gives McPherson a legitimate power heater to build around, and a quick-paced, repeatable delivery from a three-quarter slot gives the overall operation more starter credibility than the velocity alone might suggest. The secondary mix is deep — a slider with shape versatility, a curveball, and a splitter that flashes above-average dive give him multiple ways to put hitters away when the pitches are on. At his best, all of them flash plus and the arsenal is as loud as any college arm in the class.

The consistency and refinement of the secondary mix is the developmental task that will define the ceiling. The pitch shapes need to tighten and the execution needs to hold up across a full start — flashing plus and being reliably plus are different things, and the depth of the mix only matters if the command of it develops alongside the raw stuff. The delivery effort introduces some reliever risk that will be tested as he builds innings at Mississippi State, and how well he repeats the operation over longer outings will sharpen the starter vs. reliever conversation considerably.

The mid-rotation ceiling is legitimate if the secondaries tighten and the effort in the delivery stays manageable — the arm strength and pitch diversity give the profile more than enough to build from as he returns from an injury that has cost him much of the 2026 season.
