2028 MLB Draft: Kameron Gillespie, SS, Liberty

Summary:
Gillespie’s left-handed swing is what makes the profile go. A compact, anchored operation with fast hands and hard rotation through contact generates backspin and damage to all fields — the feel for adjusting the hands to match pitch plane and the ability to create loft on pitches anywhere in the zone give the hit tool a sophistication that stands out for a 2028 prospect. Handling older competition with sound swing mechanics and middle-of-field production gives the early track record genuine credibility.

The approach is where refinement is needed. A passive tendency in the box leads to favorable walk rates but also too many hittable pitches taken and too many pitcher’s counts — the natural talent at the plate is advanced enough that becoming more aggressive within the zone would allow the power projection to surface more consistently without sacrificing the contact quality. At least average game power is already there with more impact coming as the athleticism and physical development continue to trend upward.

At shortstop, quick and smooth footwork, soft hands and an above-average arm give the defensive profile legitimate long-term viability at the premium position. Particularly effective converting tough plays moving toward the left side, though flair that leads to avoidable errors and some inconsistency on routine plays are areas to sharpen. A quick-twitch first step that plays both on the dirt and on the bases rounds out a well-rounded profile with impact potential on both sides of the ball.
