2028 MLB Draft: Angel Laya, OF, Oregon

Player: Angel Laya
School: OregonPosition(s): OF
Height: 6’3″Weight: 206 lbs.Bats: LeftThrows: Right
Summary:
A Venezuelan-born outfielder who has wasted no time making an impression as a freshman at Oregon, Laya has come out of the gate with advanced barrel feel and a disciplined approach that has exceeded expectations given his high school background. The lift-oriented left-handed swing generates real pull-side power without excessive swing-and-miss, and the combination of emerging impact and contact skills gives the offensive profile a well-rounded foundation with significant developmental runway still ahead.

The athleticism is what makes the evaluation genuinely exciting. The stride, gait and pure ballplayer traits stand out on film and in person — an above-average runner with a tremendous arm that projects well in either center or right field, and wiry strength with a projectable frame that hasn’t come close to its physical ceiling yet. The power upside grows considerably as more strength is added on campus, and getting the ball in the air with greater frequency will allow the raw tools to show up in games more consistently. The anxiety in the box that leads to streaky chase rates and the barrel accuracy development are the areas that will define how quickly the ceiling comes into focus.

The power projection and athleticism give the profile a high ceiling with plenty of time to develop before the 2028 draft conversation begins in earnest. Defensive home and full offensive projection will sharpen considerably with more collegiate reps — the tools are loud enough that the evaluation warrants close attention as the freshman season builds.
