| Summary: Drafted out of the inner-city powerhouse Gardena Serra High School, CJ Hughes adds himself to the list of multi-tool athletes that Serra has produced. With a lean and durable 6’1” 160lb frame, Hughes displays exceptional athletic ability and highlight-reel defensive potential in the infield. There has been a healthy sample size for Hughes now in the Arizona Complex League, splitting time between SS and 2B. A major part of his value is his defensive prowess. Hughes jumps out as an elite mover with smooth hands and timing in the field, gets in great position, moves fluidly to and through the ball, Arm-strength is plus, while accuracy could be an issue at SS, uses long levers and athleticism well when fielding to make plays in the hole and on the run. As one of the younger prospects taken in the 2025 draft, he has taken some time to adjust to professional-level pitching. Posting a .765 OPS in 2026, there is plenty of room for development at the plate. The biggest concern is the 81 strikeouts he has accrued in 181 Plate appearances. If he can continue to mature and adjust at the plate, he should see a great improvement in production. The switch-hitting infielder has already begun to find some of his gaps power at the pro-level with 6 2B’s and 5 HR’s in his first rookie ball season. Lefty swing seems to produce the higher exit velocity and power, but both swings are fluid and serviceable. This, combined with his speed, suggests potential to become more than just an elite defensive prospect. The 18-year-old prospect has time on his side to realize his potential. With the tools he currently possesses, he is already a standout defender at 2B. Would like to see him stick as a legitimate SS prospect as he continues his climb toward the ML club. Will be an exciting talent to follow. As his body and offensive approach mature, there is plenty of upside to look forward to with Hughes. | |||||||||||
