| Summary: Currently the Braves #8 prospect, Braun is a strike-throwing RHP who has emerged as a durable starting arm for the organization. He has split time this year between their AA and AAA roster. Drafted as a collegiate senior, Braun is a mature pitching prospect who has had time to develop his pitches and command, making him an effective arm at the professional level. At 6’0 185 lbs, he is a sturdy starter with enough size to remain durable at the position over the course of the season. Command and repertoire are the real weapons that he uses to best hitters. His ability to locate and tunnel the fastball and slider combo creates a lot of his swings-and-misses. Mixes in a cutter, changeup, and curveball as well to throw hitters off the timing of his 92-96 fastball and low 80s slider. Braun is able to produce high K outings on the mound without elite velocity or break due to his sequencing and adjustability on the mound. The delivery is easy flowing and starts with a high leg kick that coils into his backside. Allows his front leg to fall down the mound and rotates, firing from a repeatable and low-effort 12 o’clock release. Slider shows good vertical depth, and he isn’t afraid to land it backfoot to put away lefty batters. Fastball has decent armside action and maintains enough velocity to freeze up hitters that are looking for the offspeed pitch. While there likely isn’t Ace starter potential with Braun at the Major League level, he has the right tools and maturity to contribute as an effective starter in a rotation. With his pitch mix, sequencing, and potential to sharpen his stuff, there is serious possibility of success as a starter for the big league club. Would like to see the slider developed further as an out pitch and improve the changeup’s effectiveness to show hitters a different look. | |||||||||||
