| Summary: Lombardo brings one of the more physically gifted bats in this year’s UConn class, though the swing that produces it is unconventional enough to be the whole story. The load features a lot of moving pieces — a wide, deliberate setup, a hitch in the hands that drops down low before the swing starts, angling the bat toward the mound, and a bigger leg kick building real tension into the back side. Exceptional strength through the hands and midsection lets him get away with it more than most hitters could, and the bat still gets through the zone in a hurry once everything fires — but the timing can get away from him at times, with the lower half starting to rotate before the front foot is fully planted, bleeding off some of the coil he’s worked to build. The offensive ceiling here is real but genuinely tied to that load getting cleaner. Present bat-to-ball skills and pitch recognition already grade as average with a workable approach, and the raw power is above-average right now — but the extra moving parts cap how much of that power shows up in games as currently built. If the swing gets simplified and the tension translates more efficiently into contact, there’s a chance for a real impact bat; until that happens, the ceiling stays out of reach more often than it should. Defensively, the tools are still very much in play in center field — plus speed and a plus arm give him a real chance to stay there, and evaluators have liked the routes so far. But added strength to an already physical frame is a real variable, and a move to a corner outfield spot remains just as plausible an outcome as staying up the middle. The formula here is straightforward: strength and bat speed give Lombardo real offensive upside, but how much of it he accesses depends entirely on cleaning up a swing that currently works through effort and physical gifts rather than efficiency. | |||||||||||
