Summary:
Ayers turned in a genuine breakout in 2026, climbing across multiple levels and capping the year with recognition from a well-regarded offseason league that meaningfully raised his prospect stock. A switch-hitter who only became a full-time catcher relatively recently, he’s built real helium off a combination of legitimate offensive tools and a defensive profile that’s improved noticeably as he’s gained experience behind the plate.

Offensively, the left side is clearly the more advanced of the two — a swing geared to work the ball up and out rather than down and through has produced legitimate home-run production, and a patient approach that’s geared toward driving the ball in the air, particularly to his pull side, has shown up in a strong walk rate. From the right side, the right-handed swing hasn’t found the same fluidity and hasn’t caught up to the same level, though the switch-hitting ability still adds value given the added rarity of the skill at the position. He’s shown real swing decisions from both sides and has continued to make strides against left-handed pitching specifically.

Defensively, the carrying tool is the arm — exceptionally fast through the exchange and clean enough in the transfer that it plays up even further, giving him a real weapon to discourage and cut down opposing base stealers. The receiving and blocking are still developing given how new he is to full-time catching, but the trajectory has been positive, and the defensive actions have continued to improve as he’s gained reps.

Between the power, the switch-hitting value at a scarce position, and a plus arm that stands out even among catching prospects, this profiles as more than a pure backup — there’s a real path to push his way into everyday at-bats behind the plate if the defense continues rounding into form, giving him a legitimate shot at a starting or heavily used timeshare role rather than a purely complementary one.
