| Summary: Kuhn works from a low arm slot with a big frame and a lot of length, a combination that gives hitters a delivery they don’t see often. The fastball sits in the mid-90s, picks up velocity as an outing goes, and has reached 99. It has serious downward action to the arm side, with a second look that rides a bit more. The velocity has held over a couple of innings, but sustaining it through a starter’s workload is an open question, and the extension is limited. The sweeper, thrown in the high 70s and into the low 80s, is the better breaking ball, and it misses bats against right-handed hitters, particularly when it follows the fastball. A shorter, firmer cutter in the mid-80s is the secondary he leans on most against righties, though the two shapes can run together on a given night. The changeup plays off the sinker’s look, with more depth and a clear speed difference. It spins at a rate that’s high for a changeup, and he’s still using it sparingly. Strike-throwing is where the evaluations disagree. Your early looks had him filling the zone with all three pitches, while the more recent reports describe scattered command. His long frame doesn’t always move in time with itself, and the arm slot doesn’t always land in the same place. When he keeps the ball down, hitters rarely square it up. When he doesn’t, the command grades below the stuff. The most likely role is in the bullpen, where the fastball and the sweeper play up in shorter bursts and the command questions carry less weight. A starting role would require the changeup to become a trusted pitch and the command to tighten, and that’s the less likely outcome. | |||||||||||
