| Summary: The profile for Irish is really tough to get a great read on. Defensively he has a good arm and does a decent job blocking the ball in the dirt, but his overall receiving ability needs a lot of work and there is some question about the overall athleticism behind the dish. There is definitely some question as to whether or not he sticks at catcher, moves to right, or is limited to first base. At the plate, the raw power is huge, but he hits the ball on the ground WAY too much to really tap into it. His ability to make contact is impressive given the power profile and body, but strikeouts really are not a big concern. That said, he chases out of the zone quite a bit and won’t walk much, that bat-to-ball skill is just good enough that it doesn’t hurt him in the strikeout column. Better pitch selection, lifting the ball better, and sticking behind the plate give Irish as much upside as any in the draft, but there is also the risk of being a first baseman that struggles to hit home runs. | |||||||||||
