| Summary: The best defensive player, not just shortstop, in the draft is Carlson, who has incredibly soft hands, good instincts, plenty of range, and an absolute cannon of an arm. The big questions come at the plate as there are some real questions about his offensive profile. He does not swing-and-miss, but he also doesn’t drive the ball well. He hits the ball on the ground way too often, and even if/when he hits line drives there just isn’t any real power in the bat to speak of. He starts with his shoulders slightly closed and has a toe tap load that times up well, but you have to be an optimist to see his hit tool as being above-average, and the power is certainly below average. If not for his incredible defensive chops, I would say I like him better on the mound, where he can run a fastball up to 96, snap off a quality 1-7 curve at 79, and a filthy fading change with real dip at 81-82. On top of that he shows command and some genuine pitchability. That all being said about the arm, he is a Gold Glove caliber shortstop, which is valuable even if he only develops an average hit tool. | |||||||||||
