Summary: There is certainly some funk to Root’s deliver, with a back bend before his body and arm fire through from a variable arm slot. He can come from a traditional 3/4 slot with mild arm bend to coming out of a very low 3/4 spot with quite a bit of arm bend. There is some fight against the front foot that does give some reliever risk appearances. He has solid command though and quality feel for three pitches. The fastball sits low-to-mid 90s but has been up to 97 and has flashed some run, although it too often gets flat and becomes quite hittable. His slider and change are his two best pitches, with there some debate in the scouting community on which is better. I like the slider best as it has sharp late two lane action and can run up to 90 MPH although it most often sits in the mid-80s. The change does have plenty of fade and dip that sees hitters swinging over at a pretty high rate. The stuff is all there, and dominating the SEC for Arkansas after spending the past two seasons with ECU could see his stock rise quite a bit.
