Summary: Mendes was a highly regarded arm heading into the summer of 2022, but a ruptured appendix cut his junior high school season short and he was still regaining his strength throughout the showcase circuit. Not being able to really show his best stuff on the circuit hurt his draft stock, but allowed him to make it to campus at Ole Miss. He worked primarily out of the bullpen and really struggled with command, walking more than five per nine. He then transferred to Florida State for 2025 where he moved into a starting role, where he improved that walk rate, but still struggled with command, walking a batter every other inning. The fastball has certainly come back to him as it sits in the low 90s but been up to 96 with plenty of life. His breaking ball has moved from a traditional curve ball shape to a gyro slider look, but it gets plenty of swing and miss. He has plenty of velo separation on his changeup, as it sits in the high 70s, easily creating 10-15 MPH difference there with plus dip and fade on it. He should be the Friday or Saturday starter for the Seminoles and could really be a big riser in 2026.
